Candle Care - Do's and Don'ts

CANDLE CARE –

Quality is extremely important when creating our beautiful homemade scented candles. Looking after the environment and our customers is a top priority but there are some necessary tips you should follow to ensure you get the most out of your products!

DO’S –

  1. First Burn:

The first burn is the most important. To ensure you get the most out of your candle products, make sure you light the candle for 2hrs at first so that it spools entirely across the top. This is because wax has memory, so to prevent tunnelling and wasted wax sticking to the sides of the jar for the rest of the candle’s life you should only light your new candle when you can safely burn it for long enough.

  1. Trim your Wick:

Once you have gotten the first burn right, keep an eye on the length of your wick. Your wick should measure approximately 6mm before lighting. To trim your wick you can do any of the following 3 things:

  • Simply pinch the wick between your fingers to break the wick and throw it away. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after.
  • Use toenail clippers to trim the wick to the appropriate size.
  • Invest in wick trimmers, as the flat design of the base catches the wick trimmings keeping your candle clean.
  1. Extinguish your Candle Correctly:

To extinguish a candle use a candle snuffer or dip the wick into the melted wax pool then straighten the wick back up. This will avoid smoke from forming or hot wax splattering.

DON’TS –

  1. Do not leave your burning candle unattended. We don’t need to explain this one any further as any open flame must be supervised at all times.
  2. Do not place your burning candle where any open windows, doors, heating or air conditioning vents are. If the candle flame is flickering in any direction there may be a draft nearby so extinguish the candle and carefully move it to a safer space.
  3. Do not let your wick get too long or begin to mushroom. A tall flame will produce more smoke and soot causing the inside of the jar to blacken. If this occurs, extinguish the flame and wait for the jar to cool down completely. Then carefully wipe the jar with a damp cloth.
  4. Do not burn your candle all the way down to the bottom to avoid overheating the base of the jar and to protect the surface your candle is placed on. Leave at least 1cm of wax at the bottom and follow our re-purposing instructions to re-use the jar.
  5. Do not place your candle jar on an uneven or unsteady surface.
